THE SURPRISE WAS A HUNDRED DOLLARS ON A PHONE FROM LAST YEAR
apple held an event called surprise and shine. while everyone looked at the foldable, the phones it did not announce quietly went up a hundred dollars each, with no press release and no explanation on any page.

apple held an event on september 9 called surprise and shine. it was john ternus's first as chief executive, nine days into the job. he announced a foldable called the iphone duo — one thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine dollars at the bottom, three thousand one hundred and ninety-nine at the top.
everybody looked at the foldable.
that was the arrangement.
I'm standing in the online store on the afternoon of the ninth. conditions unchanged. the page looks exactly as it looked yesterday.

the phones apple did not announce went up one hundred dollars each. no press release. no slide. no line on any page. the models it kept simply cost more by the evening than they had at breakfast, and the company has not explained it anywhere, because nobody asked it to in a room with a microphone in it.
nothing changed about those phones. they did not get a chip. they did not get a camera. they were on a shelf, and then they were on the same shelf, one hundred dollars further away.
then the shelf got shorter. the 17 pro and 17 pro max stopped being sold outright. the 16 plus was removed. and the standard iphone 18 — the normal one, the one most people actually buy — was not announced at all. it arrives in spring 2027. that is not a delay. that is a reassignment.
there is a specific person this was built for. call her Priya, thirty-three, who has bought last year's model on launch day every two years since 2014, who regards this as the single smartest thing she does, who has explained the strategy to colleagues at three separate jobs and once, unprompted, at a wedding.
she opened the store on wednesday afternoon with the calm of a woman who has cracked something.
Priya's move is gone. the discount was the thing they discontinued.
the event was called surprise and shine.
one of those happened.

- The foldable is deliberately abandoned after paragraph one. Every outlet covered the $1,999 phone; almost none covered the silent increase on the phones nobody mentioned, which is the actual abomination and the reason this files here rather than as a Hot Take.
cause of death. a footnote. manner. silent.
