august 17, southern california. two pickups. roughly thirty-four thousand cans of pabst leave a depot on fraudulent paperwork. forty-five thousand dollars. bound for tucson. arriving nowhere.

august 31, runcorn, england. two drivers enter an industrial park near liverpool and remove two trailers holding about eight hundred barrels of guinness. one hundred fifteen thousand pounds of beer. the trailers were worth fifty thousand more, which means somebody has stolen a hundred and sixty-five thousand pounds of thing and container and has not slept since.

I'm standing in a loading bay on two continents at once. conditions identical. doors open. paperwork fine.

A vertical cross-section of an endless cellar shaft of stacked barrels descending into darkness.

nobody has covered the logistics. the logistics are the entire story. so.

eight hundred barrels is not a heist. eight hundred barrels is a career change.

step one is storage. you cannot put eight hundred barrels in a lock-up off the a533 and expect the man at the desk — call him Deano, forty-one, does the crossword in biro, strong and unsolicited feelings about the gate — to fail to notice that unit 14 has developed its own weather system. Deano has been there eleven years. Deano knows what is in every unit. Deano has a theory about unit 9 and he will share it with you whether or not you have asked.

step two is temperature. guinness is not a shed product. it is a chilled, pressurised, time-limited product with opinions about its own environment. you have inherited eight hundred barrels of something that is actively getting worse while you decide what to do about it.

step three is sale. and here it collapses. you have to sell to pubs. a landlord who has been pulling pints since 1996 identifies an illegitimate delivery in roughly four seconds, because the legitimate one arrives with a clipboard and the other one arrives with eye contact. so you are now on your eleventh call of the day going no mate, listen, it's fine, it's completely fine to a publican who has already hung up on you twice.

step four is where it stops being a crime and becomes a business plan.

you cannot sell eight hundred barrels of stolen guinness to pubs.

so you have to open a pub.

that is the arithmetic. that is the only exit. somewhere in the northwest of england there are two men who set out to commit a robbery and have discovered, over nine days, that the sole viable disposal route for their product is a licensed premises with a food hygiene rating and a fruit machine. they need a lease. they need public liability insurance. one of them is going to have to sit a Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders, which is a real qualification, which has an exam, which he will have to revise for.

and they will be good at it. that is the thing that keeps me up. cheapest guinness in cheshire, zero overheads on stock, and one friday evening Deano is going to come in, look around, and say this is a lovely pub, lads — and they are going to have to look at each other over the taps and say nothing at all.

meanwhile, the responses.

pabst answered its theft with an amnesty. be back by a date, no questions, plus a line about not faulting anyone for wanting to brag. a rival confectionery brand slid into the comments to observe that it knows a thing or two about these kinds of things. cheshire constabulary answered with a pun about guinness being good for you, but only once bought and paid for.

that is a police force, a brewery and a chocolate bar doing crowd work about the same felony.

the beer left the way a rumour leaves a small town. fast, complete, and with several people insisting they saw nothing.

so the pattern is not the theft. thefts are old. the pattern is that the loss arrived pre-monetised. every institution that touched this crime reached for the bit before any of them reached for the beer, and the beer is still gone, and somewhere a marketing manager has quietly run the impressions-per-can on forty-five thousand dollars of stolen lager and concluded, at their desk, alone, that it went fine.

eight hundred barrels do not fit in a garage.

we are keeping the desk open. and if a new pub opens near runcorn in the next fortnight with a suspiciously deep cellar and a landlord who flinches at clipboards, we would like to be first through the door.
