THE JOKE EXISTED BEFORE THE BEER WAS STOLEN
a detective sergeant's statement on a £115,000 guinness theft is two sentences. the first is a pun. the second is not. there was never a version of this press release without the pun in it.

a detective sergeant with cheshire constabulary issued a statement on the theft of roughly eight hundred barrels of guinness from an industrial park near liverpool. one hundred fifteen thousand pounds. seventy thousand pints.
the statement opens by observing that it is famously said guinness is good for you — but that this is only the case when it has been bought and paid for.
I'm standing in a press release. it is two sentences long. it contains a complete emotional arc.

picture the drafting.
there is a room. there is a man who has been a detective sergeant long enough to own a mug with his name on it and a chair that has learned his shape. and there is a press officer — call her Gail, twenty-two years in, has outlasted three chief constables and one restructure, keeps a drawer of things she has talked men out of saying.
Gail hands him the draft. is that alright.
he reads it. he goes quiet. the quiet has a texture to it that Gail has encountered before, roughly nine times, most recently over a stolen ride-on mower.
then: can we do the thing about it being good for you.
and Gail — who has spent two decades standing between the great british public and the unsupervised wit of men with warrant cards — looks at seventy thousand missing pints, and does the arithmetic, and thinks: fine. this once.
because she already knew. she has always known. there was never a version of this press release that did not contain the pun. it was in there before the beer was stolen. it was in there before the trailers were welded. the instant the words guinness and theft entered the same incident report, that joke came into existence fully formed, like weather assembling itself over the mersey, and no living person was going to intervene.
Gail did not lose this. Gail chose the terrain.
the second sentence: they will settle for nothing less than the full recovery of all items stolen.
so — the joke, then the threat, with a single line break between them. a man with a warrant card looked at a six-figure cargo theft and reached first for the material.
we would have done exactly the same.
that is the disqualifying part.
