A VAN SWERVED ON A NORWEGIAN HIGHWAY AND ENDED A SEVEN-YEAR TREASURE HUNT

norwegian police pulled over a van outside oslo in april of last year because it was being driven erratically. inside: tens of thousands of american eagle silver coins. a second van arrived shortly after, also full of coins. total take, nearly sixty-seven thousand of them, worth roughly two point six five million dollars, and this took the verdict, announced this week, three and a half years to reach a courtroom.

three norwegians were convicted of organizing and storing the hoard. two britons were acquitted. a public prosecutor said, on the record, that he was gratified the silver had been recovered, which is the sort of sentence a person says once and means for the rest of the week.

this was not the first haul. investigators found seventy-nine thousand five hundred more of the same coins back in 2019, and were still hunting for the remainder when this second van simply failed to hold its lane.

seven years. two hoards. one country. it was never the investigation that closed the case.

it was a swerve.
