CHOPPELGANGER

noun. Your unflattering lookalike. A blend of "chopped" and "doppelgänger," describing the person who resembles you closely enough to be recognized and unfortunately enough to be an insult. The construction is the cruelest kind of efficient — it takes two syllables to communicate a comparison that would otherwise require a paragraph and end a friendship. Usage is almost always third-person, for reasons of self-preservation.

MEWING

verb. Originally a jaw-posture technique involving pressing the tongue to the roof of the mouth. Now, culturally, the accepted non-answer: to be asked a question and respond by gesturing at one's jaw, indicating that speech would compromise the routine. "I'm mewing" has become a fully load-bearing refusal to engage. A rare case of a wellness practice mutating into a communication strategy, specifically the strategy of not communicating.

CRASH OUT

verb. To lose emotional control publicly and spectacularly. Distinct from a breakdown, which is private and sad, the crash out is witnessed and carries a faint note of admiration. Applied liberally to athletes, celebrities, coworkers, and the self. The term reflects a generation's instinct to narrate life as content: a crash out is not merely an event, it is an event with an audience and, usually, a clip.

JESTERMAXXING

verb. Optimizing entirely for being the funny one. From the "-maxxing" suffix family, which attaches to any trait a person has decided to pursue past the point of proportion. The jestermaxxer converts every interaction into material and is, by broad consensus, having a somewhat harder time than they let on. Deployed affectionately more often than not.

MOGGING

verb. To dramatically out-present someone by simply existing near them. No action required — the offense is comparative and passive. To mog is to stand in a group photo and end several people's evening without speaking. The term's usefulness is that it names an entirely involuntary social crime, which is the sort of thing this decade specializes in.
