HARVARD WILL APOLOGIZE TO THE FAMILIES BY WEBINAR

harvard medical school agreed on august 18 to pay fifty-three million dollars to families whose donated relatives were sold by the man who ran its morgue. a massachusetts judge granted preliminary approval. the final hearing is december 9.

I'm standing in a scheduled webinar. it has not happened yet. attendance is expected to be families.

cedric lodge managed that morgue for nearly three decades. between 2018 and 2022 he removed parts from donated cadavers after teaching and before cremation, and sold them across state lines. he got eight years. his wife got twelve months and a day. six buyers pleaded guilty.

between three hundred fifty and four hundred donors may have been affected. every one of them volunteered. the program is called the anatomical gift program. gift is the operative word, and it is the only part of the arrangement that anyone kept.

harvard moved to dismiss in 2024 on the grounds that it had acted in good faith. the state's highest court disagreed and sent the whole thing back to the table.

the non-monetary remedies, per the filing: a live webinar in which the school will tell the families that the conduct was morally reprehensible, and an annual scholarship beginning in the 2027–28 academic year, in appreciation of the donors.

the webinar sits on the calendar the way a storm sits on a forecast. named, dated, still coming.

the donors gave their bodies away for free. the response has a start date and a login.
